Friday Favorite: Pinterest

A few weeks ago, my friend Kristen blogged about her use of a website called Pinterest. I’ve been hooked ever since. This website, while not the only one of its kind, is the only one I’ve ever used to keep track of things I find on the web. Basically, what it does is “pin” things you are interested (get the name?) in onto a “board.”

Let me walk you through it. You go to a website. You see a picture that you want to remember or find later, and you don’t want a thousand bookmarks. SO, you “pin” it to a related “board” for later.

Here, I’ve found a gorgeous nursery. I want to remember certain elements about it, so I decide to “pin” the pictures of it to my “nursery ideas” board. First, I go to the “Pin It” button and click it.

Then, it will show me every image on the page and let me pick the one I want to pin. When I hover over a picture, the “pin this” button shows up.

Then, once I’ve selected the one I want to pin, I pick a board for it to be pinned onto out of all the boards they’ve provided and that I’ve created.

After that, I can put in a description of the picture and tags, if I wish.

Then it’s saved to my board. I can close the little pop up window this happened in, have it take me to my pins, or share the pin on a social networking site.

When you join, you create your account and have the standard “boards” that they give everyone, like “wishlist,” “style board,” “for the home,” “favorite places and spaces,” etc. And you can add as many boards as you want. Boards I’ve added include “nursery ideas” (because for some reason, planning a nursery is more fun than planning a baby right now), “photography,” and “wear it.” Here are some of my boards. Tom should be happy to see that my “wishlist” board is currently empty (but not the wishlist in my head).

And here are some of my pins, when I choose to view them instead of the boards. You can see I’m a bit obsessed with the idea of having a library in my house and with shoes. And with nursery decor. I never claimed to be normal.

I love pinterest because it also saves the link to where I found each picture. That way, I can always go back to the source for more information. This is especially great for the DIY and craft type of pins I have.

Similar to Facebook, you can “like” other people’s pins. You can also “repin” a pin you like to one of your boards. If you accidentally pin something to the wrong board, it’s easy to edit your pins. This whole site is really intuitive and doesn’t really require all the explanation I have here, but I’ve found that when I see how something works on another site first, I am more likely to use it. And I definitely want y’all to use this because it makes my life so much easier (I hate having to remember where I saw something online), so it will probably simplify yours as well.

Kristen shared one of her invitations to join pinterest with me, and I received 5 invitations when I joined. I already have shared one invitation, but I have 4 more to give out. If you would like one, just let me know, and I’ll send it your way. First come, first served. However, all the recipients should also receive 5 invitations to hand out, so if you don’t get one from me because I manage to give all mine out, and you wanted one, just ask one of the people who did receive one!

Happy Pinning!
~Meghan

This is kinda creepy that I have ideas for a beautiful white library saved off too. I mean like the exact same pictures. It’s the last major project for this house that I wanted to get done at the end of this year. All my trim and everything is white so I know it will be perfect when it takes up an entire wall.

The only caveat is that I don’t read physical books, though, I might wind up filling it with photography books and maybe using a third of it as a magazine archive.

This site is really cute. It’s kinda like a fun looking evernote. :)

And if you like that kind of stuff, you definitely need to check out Olioboard!

Will do. Did you want a pinterest invite?

I do all my idea archiving in Evernote. As far as I can tell there’s not any real difference between the two for archiving ideas. But thank you anyway. :)

No problem. Just checked out Olioboard. Was at the site about 5 seconds, then decided to join. =)

That is wild! you could always use art to fill in some of the shelves, and like you said, magazines. Photobooks get a definite vote from me! =)

I love the library shelves that have the rolling ladders with them too. OBSESSED would be a better term for me, actually. I wish we had an extra living room that I could convert into a library. Some of my friends have that-extra “sitting rooms.” And no desire for a library. I die a little every time I see an unused “formal living room.”

Good Lord I have been needing this for so long!! I used to just save the photos and keep folders under a major folder called “Inspiration.” Then I would separate them by categories (i.e. Fashion, Love, Babies, etc.) in individual folders as well. Needless to say, I’d love an invitation :)

I’ll have to ask Jose about this gadget that BLEW me away! It was as though someone got in my head, saw my work flow, and created an electronic gadget to make my life easier. I think you’d like it too!

p.s. Check out my photoblog! I’m going to be giving away some Spain prints :)

    • Meghan September 10, 2010 at 11:04 pm #

I’ll send you an invite! What’s the name of that gadget? And I’ll go check out your blog!! =)
